History of CFT steel sections

Concrete-filled steel sections, abbreviated CFT, are a group of mixed sections that use the common function of steel in the environment and concrete in the central part for freight.
The main idea of the origin of these sections is the combination of concrete and steel, the use of these benefits is the advantages of each of these materials. This combination leads to the creation of a structure with superior features compared to conventional concrete and steel structures.

Application of steel sections filled with concrete

The scope of application of concrete-filled steel sections includes short-term to high-level structures. In high-rise, ultra-long-range structures, the bending frame with CFT columns usually combines with another side load system such as reinforced concrete shear core, steel shear wall, or concrete.
Some CFT-level executive projects include:

Taipei Tower 101

Plaza Building

World Trade Building

Canton Tower Structure

Zhang Hua Jialing Bridge

Taiping Lake Bridge

Advantages of filled sections with concrete

The main economic advantage of these sections is the reduction of the amount of steel consumed and the result of the cost of the project and at the same time improving the quality and performance of the structure. The use of CFT sections can improve the set of behavioral characteristics of the structure, including the optimal use of steel and concrete resistance, the adjustment of the local buckling of the column steel section, the increase in useful life and resistance. Other benefits of CFT sections include:

  • Weight loss of steel used in the column
  • Reduce the cost and time of construction and installation of structures using HSS sections
  • Eliminate or reduce the cost of protecting columns against fire
  • Increase useful space
  • Improving the quality of construction
  • Ability to use column sections with the same dimensions in height
